Why I made this show
A note on what A Considerate Retirement is for, and why I made it the opposite of the money media that only wants to sell you a product or scare you into it.

I want to start with a friend of mine. Brilliant at what he does.
For years, he came to me for advice. Not because I was his advisor. Because everyone who was supposed to be advising him had really just been selling to him.
A big bank had told him the bonds he owned were safe, right up until they were worth almost nothing.
A man who called himself a financial advisor told him, warmly and often, how much he cared about him and his family. Then he sold him annuities that paid the salesman very well, and were wrong for my friend.
And still, for years, no one was simply looking out for him.
And he is not the exception. He is closer to the rule.
Now, I don't want you to think everyone in this business is a crook. They're not.
Most are good, decent people, doing exactly what they were trained to do. Paid by a company to sell one kind of thing. Many have never been shown the other side themselves.
And that's really the point. Whether that man meant well or not almost doesn't matter. What mattered is that he wasn't on my friend's side. The training wasn't. The paycheck wasn't.
That's the quieter, bigger problem. Not a few villains you could learn to spot. It's a whole industry built to sell.
Because almost everything you have ever heard about your money is trying to do one of two things. Sell you a product. Or scare you into it.
Think about it. The headline that says the crash is coming. The ad for the product that supposedly fixes everything. The fellow on television who is very sure about what happens next. The newsletter, the hot tip, the free steak dinner with a sales pitch attached to it.
And somewhere in the middle of all that noise is you. A person with a real decision to make, and almost no one in the room who is simply on your side.
This is A Considerate Retirement. I'm Josh Mangoubi.
I made this show to be the opposite of all that noise. To be, for you, what my friend went years without. Someone in the room who is simply on your side.
Here is the whole idea. This show exists for one reason. To be useful to you. If you leave an episode a little clearer, a little calmer, able to make one decision a little better, then it did its job. That is the whole deal.
No urgency. Nobody telling you the sky is falling so you will buy something before Friday. Just one honest idea at a time, explained the way I would explain it to a friend.
Let me tell you why I care about this.
I have spent my career sitting with people at the biggest money moments of their lives. The day they retire. The day they sell the business they spent thirty years building. The day they lose the person they built all of it with. And what struck me, over and over, was how little calm, honest help there was for them. Plenty of people wanted to sell them something. Almost no one just wanted to explain it.
I think that is a shame. Because the decisions that actually shape your retirement are not that many, and they are not out of reach. They are just rarely laid out for you plainly, by someone who is not also trying to close a sale.
And explaining is the part I love most. If I'm honest, I think of myself as a teacher as much as an advisor. Because the most useful thing I can give you is not a recommendation. It's understanding.
Every real money decision has two sides. An upside, and a downside. The person selling shows you only the half that closes the sale. My job is to show you both, plainly, and let you weigh them against your own life.
Because when you understand a choice before you make it, you make a better one, and you feel steadier making it. And when the downside comes, and eventually it always does, you are not blindsided. You expected it. Your expectations meet reality. And that is where real confidence comes from.
So that is what this is. A quiet place to think out loud about your money.
Here is what you can expect. Each episode takes one idea and makes it clear. When there are real numbers, I will tell you where they came from. And when a number is just an example, to make a point or to protect someone's privacy, I will tell you that too. When something is genuinely uncertain, I will say so, instead of pretending I know. Some weeks the topic is a tax decision. Some weeks it is quieter, like what your mornings are actually for once the work is gone. And every episode ends with one small, doable thing. I call it your Considerate Step.
So let me give you your first one.
Your Considerate Step this week is a small act of rebellion.
The next time something, a headline, an ad, a worried voice, tells you to do something urgent with your money, do nothing. Just notice the urgency, and let it pass.
Almost nothing about your money truly has to be decided today. That pause, that little bit of calm, is the whole spirit of this show. You may as well start practicing it now.
So, back to all that noise we began with. The selling, the scaring, the men who are very sure.
The one thing I hope you carry out of this first episode is simple. You are allowed to tune it out. You do not have to be sold to, or frightened, to make good decisions about your money. You just need a little quiet, and a few honest ideas, taken one at a time. That is what I am here to give you.
You can find all of it at a considerate retirement dot com. And if you want a place to start, listen to the one called A retirement needs somewhere to go. It is about what the mornings are for, once the work that filled them is gone.
One quick, important note. I'm the founder of Considerate Capital, a registered investment adviser. This was a personal story, meant to be useful, not financial advice or a recommendation for you.
The friend I described was real, and I've kept him unnamed out of respect.
Nothing here is a promise of results.
For your own decisions, talk with someone who knows your details.
I'm Josh Mangoubi. This week, when something tells you to hurry, don't. I'll see you next time.
